A UK university research group had two adjacent thermal-energy technologies from the same lead researcher. Both technically credible. Both with a plausible commercial future. The institutional instinct was to commercialise them together as a single spinout. That was the wrong call.
What Hatch did
Assessed both technologies separately against the same commercial framework, market, competitive landscape, technical roadmap, and commercial form and found they diverged immediately.
One was a product. Discrete. Certifiable. Deployable without a host system. Clear differentiation against named incumbents. That technology could carry a spinout.
The other was a feature. It enhanced existing equipment but could not reach end-users without integration into an established manufacturer’s product. That technology needed a licensing or co-development agreement, not a company.
Hatch introduced the leading industrial partner now developing the subsystem technology toward a licensing deal. The standalone technology is currently in pre-spinout development.
Two technologies. Two paths. Both moving.
Where it stands
Both engagements ongoing. Findings remain commercially confidential.
